The Kids Of The Southwest "KSW" spent a weekend (August 20 through August 22) on Elephant Butte being educated, having fun, fishing, and continuing their efforts trying to improve their home lake.  Saturday was an incredible day as the KSW Jr Bassmasters took on the challenge of taking New Mexico's Boater Safety Course.  The course is an 8 hour course designed to educate, and improve the overall safety for boaters.  The course is nationally accredited, and approved by the U. S. Coast Guard.  Tough would be an understatement; however thanks to Ranger Boylan, and his ability to teach/instruct the kids they all passed.   13 members of the KSW club are now trained, and ready to tackle the challenges of becoming boaters.  Congratulations to all who took on the challenge; the kids have a challenge for all anglers, and recreational users of our lakes to also take the course.  The knowledge gained from the course is extremely beneficial to all not just anglers.  Time for some R&R, next for the kids was a cookout.  First and foremost a big thank you to Frank Ramsey for opening up his house to the kids, boat captains, friends, and family members.  Another big thank you to Chase Kemp for providing the elk burgers.  The kids and adults had a great time relaxing, and telling fish stories over some awesome burgers and beverages.  KSW is a fishing club, so Sunday morning was spent fishing.  The KSW had a fun tournament with a few twist.  Anglers where limited to two rods, three fish limit, each angler would be limited to one hour on his or her water.  The last hour would be happy hour as even the boat captains were given one hour.  What a blast for the kids and captains; winning for the captains was a former Jr angler Nicholas DiCamillo, winning for the seniors was Clayton Ramsey, for the junior division we had no winner.  It should be noted that Frank Ramsey, Josh Bustamonte, and Nic Arietta where all DQ'd for being late (mechanical failure).  Tough call as all three had fish, and two out of three would have easily won their group.  Rules are rules, and they apply to everyone congratulations to all the winners.  Next the KSW club spent the rest of the day giving back to their favorite lake.  The kids picked up trash at Dam Site Marina doing their best to restore the area to its natural state.  It was depressing to see just how many bottles, and cans are thrown in, and around our lakes.  It was a huge task for the KSW as they scaled the steep banks, and thick brush in the area.  The KSW want to say thank you to all the staff from Elephant Butte State Park, Neal Brown, and of course their awesome sponsors for helping them have an incredibly successful year.  Check out the photos below of KSW in action on their clean up.
